About Camp

Camp Good Times provides the only camp in the Lowcountry devoted exclusively to children with autism and their friends. Our counselors are trained in the field and design programs to promote socialization, opportunities for children to explore their community during planned outings, and for two weeks a year - just be kids.

Autism is a result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal development of the brain in the areas of reasoning, social interaction and communication skills. Children with autism typically have deficiencies in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Their needs are intense and require highly trained, competent staff.

Camp Good Times understands the needs of children with autism and how to provide a summer camp opportunity that any child would have available to them. Camp Good Times offers summer day camp experiences to promote the development of social, communication, and recreational skills in an inclusive setting with typical peers. Beyond the school setting, where opportunities for inclusion with peers may be limited for many students, the tri-county area has few other group opportunities available for children with autism.

Our activities include swimming, field trips, sports, arts and crafts, dancing, singing, playing instruments and the same type of experiences other summer camps provide. The camp's timeline and schedule of activities is a year-long effort of family networking, staff recruitment, interaction with school districts and county disability boards, fund raising and finally planning of the camp session by a dedicated board of directors and the camp staff. Camp Good Times is historically in session during the month of June.

In addition to assisting children with autism, Camp Good Times works toward exposing typically developing children to those with autism, fostering empathy, diversity, awareness and respect for those with disabilities. We pride ourselves on our high staff-to-camper ratio, highly trained staff, family support, and use communication aids, modifications, and other necessary and appropriate accommodations to allow every camper to participate, engage, communicate and connect with others in our program.
